Differences between hard, soft, and master resets

Thank you for BlackBerry.com, JSanders and Grimlin @ BlackBerryForums.com for contributing to this FAQ.

Resetting the BlackBerry device is a useful way to resolve issues and is usually the first step in troubleshooting the BlackBerry device. Knowing the differences between a hard, soft, double-soft, and master reset ensures that the correct troubleshooting method has been chosen.
Note: Backup all applications before resetting the BlackBerry device using the Backup and Restore tool on the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

Performing a SOFT reset on the BlackBerry device

Performing a soft reset stops all applications on the BlackBerry device by pressing the ALT+RIGHT SHIFT(CAP)+DELETE keys. A soft reset re-establishes communication between the BlackBerry device and the computer.
Note: This does not apply to the BlackBerry® Pearl™ smartphone.

Performing a DOUBLE-SOFT reset on the BlackBerry device

Performing a double-soft reset stops all applications on the BlackBerry device and is nearly the equivalent of a hard reset. Timing however is critical. Perform a soft reset by pressing the ALT+RIGHT SHIFT(CAP)+DELETE keys. The screen will go blank. When the screen is no longer black, press the ALT+RIGHT SHIFT(CAP)+DELETE keys again. You should then see another blank screen followed by an hour glass.
Note: This does not apply to the BlackBerry® Pearl™ smartphone.

Performing a HARD reset on the BlackBerry device

The first step in troubleshooting a network, software or hardware error is often to perform a hard reset. With Java® based devices, this is accomplished by removing the battery, while the BlackBerry device is powered on. Hold the battery out for about 30 seconds, and replace. The BlackBerry device will reboot.
Note: A hard reset on a C++ based device is accomplished by pressing the Reset button.
Note: To perform a hard reset on a RIM models 850, 857, 950, or 957 device, insert the end of a paperclip inside the small hole on the back of the handheld.

Reasons to perform a hard reset

The following shows the possible reasons for performing a hard reset on a BlackBerry device.

Network Issues

  • Handheld displays an X beside the coverage indicator.
  • Handheld displays GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) or lower case gprs (General Packet Radio Service) as the network status indicator.
  • User is unable to send or receive messages on the handheld.

Software Issues

  • User receives an error code on the handheld.
  • Applications do not appear to be functioning correctly.
  • Desktop Manager is stuck at “working” status when the handheld is connected.
  • Bluetooth is not detected.

Hardware Issues

  • Handheld display is hard to read. For example, the display shows lines obscuring text.
  • Keypad is not functioning correctly. For example, keys do not work, the trackwheel is not functioning correctly, or the handheld does not turn on.

Performing a MASTER reset

The master reset feature is not available on the BlackBerry device and is only applicable to selected manufacturer devices. A master reset removes all user-installed applications and data, including BlackBerry Connect software. For more about master resets, contact your service provider.

Keep the latest DocsToGo version after an OS upgrade

From BlackBerryFAQ

If you want to upgrade your BlackBerry OS after you have a newer version of DocsToGo installed, you have to do the following steps:

1. Install the new OS on the PC
2. Navigate to C:\Program files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\New OS Folder
3. Delete the "DocumentsToGo.alx" file, or rename it to "DocumentsToGo.old". Moving that file to a different folder is another option.
4. Perform the OS upgrade
When AppLoader is run, the loader will pick up DocsToGo as a 3rd-party app. It'll then back it up and restore it normally. If you don't delete the DocumentsToGo.alx file the loading process will downgrade the DocsToGo to the version included in the OS.

Errors in BlackBerry

Errors syncing the BB with Desktop Manager

From BlackBerryFAQ

If you get an error "Unable to write or update application data" when syncing your BB with Desktop Manager, the culprit is usually one of two main problems:

In Addressbook:

Potential Conflict

The error may refer to a specific record that would not sync, or is causing the problem. If you don't know which record, look the log of the Desktop Manager sync to find it.
A contact in Outlook, ACT!, Lotus Notes, or Lotus Organizer does not contain information in any of the following fields:
First Name, Last Name, OR Company Name

Resolution 1

Populate one or more of the above fields in the contact entry or delete the blank entry in the PIM application on the computer. A contact name could also have a strange ASCII character.
From within Outlook, if you go to View>Arrange By>Current View>By Category the contacts will be listed in a row/column format. If you then sort by Full Name, you'll see all contact missing both the first and last name. You can even use the field chooser by right clicking on a column header, then clicking field chooser, which will cause a window to appear with different column headings that are available. Simply drag and drop the First Name, then the Last Name fields into the column header row and they'll become a part of the current view.
From here, you'll just want to make sure that at minimum you have at least one letter/number (avoid punctuation and symbols) in at least one of the two Name fields (First or Last), then sync and you should be all set. The key is to have a value in the Full Name field (which is built by the First and Last).

Resolution 2

Upgrade to BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.2 Service Pack 1 or later. BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.2 Service Pack 2 or later will skip the affected contact records, but only if the contact does not have an email address. If the contact contains an email address, it will be successfully synchronized even if the First Name, Last Name, and Company fields are blank.

A calendar entry could be the fault:

Calendar entries with attachments can't sync. Change your view in calendar to only show entries with attachments and delete the attachment.
Open calendar in outlook - choose view, arrange by and current view then customize current view. Choose Filters, then the tab for more options and choose "only items with" and choose attachments.

    1. What’s the My World folder in BlackBerry App World?
The My World folder is an online record of the applications an end user has purchased or downloaded for free through BlackBerry App World. Users can:
      • Uninstall and reinstall applications
      • Archive and restore applications to internal memory or a microSD card
      • Add a review for an application

When updates are available to applications that have been installed, the user will be notified and can view the update details.
    2. How many applications can a user store?
An unlimited number of applications can be stored in BlackBerry App World.
    3. Does My World allow the user to re-download paid-for applications?
Yes. There are no restrictions on how many times users can install or download their applications to the BlackBerry smartphone on which they were purchased.

If a user switches from one BlackBerry smartphone to a new BlackBerry smartphone, they can log in to BlackBerry App World on their new BlackBerry smartphone and download their paid applications from the My World folder.
    4. If a user accidently deletes an application, do they have to purchase the application again?
No. If a user purchases and downloads an application, they’ll have the ability to download it without having to pay for it again. Users can access their applications from the My World folder in BlackBerry App World.
    5. How many times can a user re-download paid applications from My World to a different device?
If a user needs to switch from a BlackBerry smartphone to a new BlackBerry smartphone, they can log in to My World on the new BlackBerry smartphone and re-download their paid applications. The customer can migrate between smartphones up to five times in a calendar year.
    6. What happens if the paid application stored in My World is incompatible with a user’s new BlackBerry smartphone?
If a purchased application is incompatible with a new model, the user would be notified from within the My World folder. To continue using the application, the user would need to purchase a new version of the application, if available.

Yes, with BlackBerry App World v1.1, users can archive their downloaded and purchased applications on a microSD card.
    8. How do users archive applications on their BlackBerry smartphone?
In My World, users can access a menu option called Archive. When clicked, BlackBerry App World will uninstall the application from the device memory and store it on the microSD card.

The icon for the application will still appear (default on OS v4.5 and below is the home screen, on OS v4.6 it’s the Downloads directory). The icon will have a green arrow in the bottom corner indicating it’s been archived.

Users can click on the icon and will be prompted to restore the application. Users can also restore the application from inside BlackBerry App World.
    9. Where do applications go when users install them?
Any application installed on the BlackBerry smartphone (from BlackBerry App World or anywhere else) is installed in flash memory. Each BlackBerry smartphone has a different amount of flash memory and this is what determines how many applications each device can have installed. With the archiving feature, applications can be stored on the microSD card and restored when a user wants to use them.
    10. How are dynamic licenses handled during a device switch?
When a user re-connects to My World on a new smartphone, all the dynamic serial numbers are automatically regenerated and the new serial numbers are sent to the device.

  • Using BlackBerry As Modem

HOW TO: BlackBerry As Modem For Laptop

    Introduction.
    1. Connect Your BlackBerry Make sure your BlackBerry is connected by USB cable, and your BlackBerry Handheld Manager is running (just launch BlackBerry Desktop to run it.) This is necessary for using the BlackBerry as an external modem. You cannot use BlackBerry as a modem unless you have BlackBerry Handheld Manager running in the background! Note: For a Bluetooth modem connection on new Curve devices the BlackBerry Manager does not have to run in the background for the connection to work. You need to simply pair your laptop and the Curve.

    2. AT-T-BLACKBERRY-CURVE.jpg
    3. Verify The Modem Driver Is Functioning
Go to Control Panel -> Phone & Modem Options. In the Modems tab, you should see a new Standard Modem on a new port (such as COM6 or COM11). Click Properties -> Diagnostics -> Query Modem. You should see the following:Quote:
      ATQ0V1E0 - OK
      AT+GMM - BlackBerry IPmodem
      AT+FCLASS=? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
      AT#CLS=? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
      AT+GCI? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
      AT+GCI=? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
ATI1 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI2 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI3 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI4 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI5 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI6 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI7 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
Note: This may look different on Nextel 7520, or Sprint/Verizon/Bell Mobility 7250. This is normal. Just make sure there is a response at all, rather than no response.
